I agree Clark - sounds like the problem is the carb's not feeding any gas into the manifold. I presume you've tried removing the drain plug or valve from the bottom of the carb bowl, and you get a solid stream of gas when you do (indicating gas is getting into the float bowl)?? If yes, then the problem has gotta be either the internal jet is plugged (most likely) or possibly the air valve is outta whack. The only adjustment I believe is for the float level. (Being a '54 it should be the "late model" carb - the "early" carbs had an air valve adjustment as well.) Anyway the float needlevalve should close when the gas level is 7/16" below the gasket surface of the float bowl (adjust by bending the tang on the float hanger). I'd check to see that the jet is clear, also that there's 1/8" gap between the air valve disc and the top surface of the carb body. Once again good luck!!
