Can a MD be started on diesel?

It's a dumb question. But I have heard you can start an MD on diesel if the engine is still hot..if you have enough starter power to turn the engine. If so, why can't you buy a starter motor to handle that all the time? Forget about the start on gas and switch to diesel? In case any of you are wondering, no I don't plan on wrecking a perfectly good MD, by starting or modifying it that way.
