All International Harvester products including Farmall that started on gas use an extra compression reducing valve arrangement with the spark plug in a chamber above the valve. This makes the engine very easy to turn over and starters last a long time. We had a WD-9 and when batteries were dead, often cranked by hand. While the compression ratio may be low, I suspect the reason for gas starting on this as well as most other diesels of that era, was the low pressure injection systems used. The fuel could not be atomized enough to burn when the engine was cold. As you may know, John Deere and Caterpillar used pony engines to start their diesel engines.
