The correct repair would be to follow Justin's description by installing a repair sleeve, then bore to accept the new sleeve, finally install the sleeve. This method is permanent without any chance of leakage that would be possible with sealants. The next guy then can remove the piston sleeve in the ordinary way and no worry to him of resealing. Peace of mind for everybody it will last another 50 years. Probably adds no more than $40 or $50 to the project.
