welded M frame

I noticed the other day that it looks like the frame of my M has been welded on both sides right near where the frame connects to the bell housing. i have only had if for a few months now but i wonder what the previous owners did to it to need welding. it doesn't look anywhere else like there was any other damage. what do you think? can you mess that frame up and not hurt anything else? jeff
