Color of Wheel Weights

My recollection is that the original color of the wheel weights on Farmall Tractors was not the same IH red as the rest of the tractor. This is verified by some archive photos I have seen recently. The weights are a more dull redish color, definitely not the same as the rest of the tractor. Looks like maybe the weights were just painted with a primer, or were they not painted at all and the color is just rust. Anybody know what was the original finish on the weights. Just about all the restorations I see paint the weights IH red.
