No auction I ever went to were you stuck to pay for an item if you are not the high bidder. The owner should not be bidding, but can have right of refusal of the final bid, usually for a fixed fee to the auctioneer. If the owner does bid and has the high bid, then he bought it back and has to pay the auctioneer's fee. Don't know about YT auction, but on E bay it's policy that the owner can't bid.
