Farmall C Cracked Head ??

I finally got back to my C yesterday. (It's been acting as if it was overheating and losing compression) This tractor does not have a water pump. I removed the temp gauge and tested it in boiling water - works fine. Re-installed it, filled the system and started it up. The top radiator hose gets HOT. The lower hose is cool as a cucumber. (I had previously flushed the radiator and block and found no sign of blockage in either). Within minutes of idling, I can tell the engine is getting too hot. The temp gauge, being mounted at the lower hose is not registering at all. Looking into the coolant I see what looks like tiny fizz-like bubbles. Does this indicate a cracked head?
