What burns me not only can they not find part, but hwen they do they charge you 4-8 bucks shipping to get the part next week w/their own normal shipments local autoparts both autozone and advanced started doing that. I said its on the same truck yoru normal shipment comes in isnt something huge like a engine or antying that some freight woudl be understandable for jsut say a cap and rotor they started charging freight becuase it "wasnt a stocked item". that burns me up since it came on the same turckas thier normal shipment. not a big enough item they sent it on its own truck struck was going their weather my part was on it it or not not liek that made them take a semi instead of a van truck or anyting like that.

Lookat it from this point of view, you are going to apy the freight, somewhere. I charge freight on every non stock item ordered. Now, we can do this two ways we can sell it to you at the regular MSRP, plus tax and shipping, or we can charge the MSRP, add the shipping to the MSRP, then add sales tax, it would them cost you more. At least in Illinois, there is no sales tax on shipping, so by adding the freight seperatly, they are actually saving you a little bit of money. What would make you madder, to get charged 8.00 plus 6.00 shipping or get charged 14.00 for it, then find out it only sells for 8.00, you would then tell every one they are a rip off, becasue they are charging 6.00 more than MSRP. You do not know what it is supposed to sell for, so they could just double the price on everything, then not charge you freight, would that be better for you?

Ordered a screw for my old double barrel the other day (.99 cents) and was charged $5,45 for shipping and handling and it came in a thick envelope in the mail box.

That is going to happen anywhere. The screw probably cost them .50 or more, so on the part, they made .49. But, they have an employee that has to put it in an envelope, that they bought for .35, then a stamp, minumum .39, and then it took the employee 20 minutes to process the order, go to the parts bin, pull part, repackage it to ship, take it to the shipping area, put in the envelope, and mail, if the employee is getting paid 8.00 per hour, plus benefits, insurance, social cecurity, cost the employer 12.00 per hour to have him there, so at 20 minutes time, it added 4.00 to the order, so there is 4.74, then you have the office personel;s wages on top of that to pay the bill, and process your peperwork and get it the the person who pulls the order and pack it for shipping as previously stated. Now, would you do all that is required to get your screw to you for .49 profit, don't think you honestly would.

Standard procedure, Case-IH, JD, and probably all others do it too. Just accept it and don't get excited, part of today's world. Still cheaper than having UPS ship it directly to you.

I recently ordered a 38" mower deck housing at my JD dealer. They said that if I wasn't in a hurry & could wait till the regular truck came in there would be no freight charge.
A week later it was here. No freight charge!

The local dealers get daily deliveries from their distribution centers, mostly Kansas City and Denver. I really think the local people are just passing on what is charged them, the suppliers are who makes the money. Not saying I can get something that big delivered overnight, as they probably don't sell that many mower decks, etc. And that might be a weekly delivery from another source. And, with the larger items, they probably make enough money so that shipping costs are not a big factor in their profit. On the other hand, when I order individual very heavy items shipped directly to me (aftermarket 3-point hitches come to mind), shipping adds 10-15% to the price. But, in general where you get taken is small items. It's best to consolidate my orders as much as possible, but it usually doesn't work out that way.

Last year I had the same thing happen to me but it was at Sears. I went to get a refrigerator door gasket. They were going to charge me freight. When I questioned them they said,as above, it isn't a stocked item. I told them if that was the case and I run their store I wouldn't stock anything and get that high shipping. BTW shipping wasn't cheaper than UPS. Can't remember now exactly but it was over 2 times the UPS rate. I ask if they would ship UPS and of course no. Since I live 35 miles from their store I said OK just send it to my home since you have to ship. That is when they told me it came with their regular goods and if I wanted it to go to my home, that would be a 2nd shipping charge. I left without the gasket and made a search on the internet and found one that was cheaper than theirs and saved nearly $20.00 because not only was it cheaper, shipping was cheaper and no sales tax because it was out of state. BTW, it fit perfectly.

I work in a LARGE insurance company's mailroom and I see what the negotiated rates are for UPS, and I know that any large shipper gets the same low rates. The charges most places charge have no connection to what they are actually paying to ship.

Curiously, I order Japanese language books from a bookstore in Hong Kong with free shipping and they are cheaper than any American bookstore before shipping is figured.

As to shipping, I was mostly talking about the local tractor dealers, not rip-off artists such as Sears and others where shipping is usually a major part of the cost, and where they make a lot of their money.
