Went to Autozone to buy several fuel and oil filters for my tractors. They didn't even have my older tractors listed. They didn't have a cross refrence for Wix filters. The salespeople consisted of two girls about twenty five years old. This was probibly the problem. I only stopped because this is a new store about one mile from where I live. I drove an additional five, miles in traffic, to CARQUEST and got everything I needed. Told these guys what happened at Autozone and they just laughed. They said they here this all the time. Sounds like Autozone needs to do less T.V. advertising and hire some people that know the difference in a carburetor and a brake shoe.

I live in a built up area and still have a lot of choices but the ones that had big machine shops and full service are gone the old speed shop/auto parts are still here and there but pep boys and autozones are hurting them.I still patronize the older stores and like the Delco parts. One guy near me sort of specializes in older car parts and also runs the local hot rod night every week [April to Oct]But in talking to him I found out he is moving alot of his old and maybe rare stuff on ebay.He told me he sold a brake vacuum canister fitting 56-59 ford truck but also 55,56,57 T-Birds on ebay for 600 bucks. He said without ebay he never would have sold it.Most of his stuff is the higher quality brands. My only complaint is when Im working on something I just want to get it done and when you go into his store he talks for an hour.He also complains about a new Autozone a few miles away in NY state.Ive been to that store and they are cluless as far as being any type of motorheads.Times and cars have changed also. They arent made in Detroit either.Yuppies dont get their hands dirty and alot of the backyard mechanics are minorities.Stores do well in "bad" neighborhoods also.Id have to learn spanish to go to Pep Boys.Flyers arent even in english.

Very simple equation to what is happening to parts stores.

1. Jim Bob's home town auto parts stocks fast and slow moving parts to provide complete service to all local gear heads. Fast move equates to make money, slow move equals no make money but fast moves are priced a little higher so store can stock slow movers as service and not lose hind end doing it. Also provides steady employment for local gearhead or two.

2. The Auto Pep Zone Boys move into town but does not care about local gearhead's 35 year old toys so no slow moving parts nor costs involved. Also kids and women who can punch in make model year, color and number of doors in computer are willing to work cheaper with no benefits so guess who gets jobs?

3. Parts buyers purchase oil, filters and spark plugs fordaily drivers at Auto Pep Zone because they saves .38 cents and store is open evenings, Sundays and holidays

4. Jim Bob's looses 50% of business that made money but has all of busness that looses money.

5. Gearheads go to Jim Bob's for parts for 35 year old toy and find empty lot and closed sign.

Happening everywhere, same story just fill in your towns name.

I just noticed I forgot to mention one thing. It sounds as if I favor going to O Reilly's over NAPA. No, but I am a Rural Mail Carrier, and usually by the time I get off the route, back home, then run to town the only ones open are Autozone or O Reilly's. They also have a "super" Walmart over there, but that is an absolute last resort for anything. Might buy oil if absolulety needed, but would rather buy Rotella from Farm and Home across the river in Keokuk, IA about 30 miles west. We have a local farm store here, but won't mention name. Just let it suffice to say if I need anything actually farm related, especially roller chain or links, etc, they don't have it. If you want to go hunting or buy the wife a new roaster, etc, they have that kind of stuff. I will just say that their bussiness name says "Farm ----"

I agree, here locally we just lost in the last year an independent parts store that HAD what you needed at a fair price. The previous owner is now working as a route driver for Carquest, but anything I want from them is much higher than going to NAPA across town. I used to get a lot of parts from Autozone, but don't even set foot in the store since they fired everyone who knows what they are doing and decided to hire females and minorities from our local university. I don't speak spanish, and don't want to learn it in order to get parts. Regarding the girls, I know some very good female parts "men" and mechanics, but not here. O Reilly's just opened shortly before JC's closed, since Jim is gone I get most of my common parts there. Just don't say F20 Farmall, Willy's Jeep, etc. Too old or ag listing just won't work.

Actually you have that backward, on the fast moving parts, the margins are actually lower to attract more busniess, with a lower retial price and the slow moving parts are where you make the big bucks, not a lot of people stock slow moving parts, so when someone needs a slow moving part, they are so surprised that it is in stock, they will pay what ever price that is being charged, with not a whimper or word. As long as everyone is more interested in cheap, supporting the big box store instead of the local merchants who give you 110% when you need help, and are there to support your community, this is what you will get, poor service, and more expense when you do need something you cannot buy at Walmart!

If you want good service, good help etc go to a dealer or good tractor supplier and expect to pay for the service because it costs the company.
Go to a cheapie place and expect cheapie service and parts.

Used car salesmen are more honest than the parts stores < had a route that had about 20 different stores on it and I ran the route nightly and I would see pallets of brake drums and rotars that were shipped to stores that were made in china . The next night I would deliver empty wagner brake boxes guess what they got put in them ??? Now I know why the parts store always asked me if they could keep the empty box before

Every so often there is a thread on these tractor forums about the poor service they receive at auto parts stores. (they are auto parts houses, not tractor supply)For the most part I find these clerks do their very best to help me out. As a retired supervisor with 38 years experience, most of these people could work for me anytime, as they try to get you the part you need. Just this afternoon, the fellows at Checker Auto Parts went overboard to locate a caliper bracket for a Ford Ranger for me. They finally traced down a supplier, but had to order it and it will be here Monday. The Ford dealership also could order me one and have it here by Monday. The only difference was Ford wanted $87.90 and Checker wanted $14.99.

Not sure if it's still true, but years back when I interviewed for a job with AutoZone [didn't take it because I was making more money as a counterman for a Ford dealer than AutoZone paid their store managers at the time], AutoZone was run by Malone and Hyde, the grocery people. The concept was all about turning the inventory over as fast as your average grocery does, and not about having the part you need, when you need it. If you can fill 80% of customer demand out of your stock, you've met their goal. It's NOT about the goal of reaching that 90-92% fill rate by having the right mix of parts for your market, as it used to be in the dealership. I'd be williing to bet that AutoZone doesn't even track lost sales...because they're all about selling what they HAVE, and not about stocking what they DON'T have [regardless of demand].

So keep putting those Mom-and-Pop parts stores out of business because they charge a little more, but have what you need when you need it...as farmers, you know all about chickens coming home to roost.

Shipping charges in reply to Jiles, 10-26-2006 06:19:44
What burns me not only can they not find part, but hwen they do they charge you 4-8 bucks shipping to get the part next week w/their own normal shipments local autoparts both autozone and advanced started doing that. I said its on the same truck yoru normal shipment comes in isnt something huge like a engine or antying that some freight woudl be understandable for jsut say a cap and rotor they started charging freight becuase it "wasnt a stocked item". that burns me up since it came on the same turckas thier normal shipment. not a big enough item they sent it on its own truck struck was going their weather my part was on it it or not not liek that made them take a semi instead of a van truck or anyting like that.

Lookat it from this point of view, you are going to apy the freight, somewhere. I charge freight on every non stock item ordered. Now, we can do this two ways we can sell it to you at the regular MSRP, plus tax and shipping, or we can charge the MSRP, add the shipping to the MSRP, then add sales tax, it would them cost you more. At least in Illinois, there is no sales tax on shipping, so by adding the freight seperatly, they are actually saving you a little bit of money. What would make you madder, to get charged 8.00 plus 6.00 shipping or get charged 14.00 for it, then find out it only sells for 8.00, you would then tell every one they are a rip off, becasue they are charging 6.00 more than MSRP. You do not know what it is supposed to sell for, so they could just double the price on everything, then not charge you freight, would that be better for you?

That is going to happen anywhere. The screw probably cost them .50 or more, so on the part, they made .49. But, they have an employee that has to put it in an envelope, that they bought for .35, then a stamp, minumum .39, and then it took the employee 20 minutes to process the order, go to the parts bin, pull part, repackage it to ship, take it to the shipping area, put in the envelope, and mail, if the employee is getting paid 8.00 per hour, plus benefits, insurance, social cecurity, cost the employer 12.00 per hour to have him there, so at 20 minutes time, it added 4.00 to the order, so there is 4.74, then you have the office personel;s wages on top of that to pay the bill, and process your peperwork and get it the the person who pulls the order and pack it for shipping as previously stated. Now, would you do all that is required to get your screw to you for .49 profit, don't think you honestly would.

Standard procedure, Case-IH, JD, and probably all others do it too. Just accept it and don't get excited, part of today's world. Still cheaper than having UPS ship it directly to you.

CNKS;

I recently ordered a 38" mower deck housing at my JD dealer. They said that if I wasn't in a hurry & could wait till the regular truck came in there would be no freight charge.
A week later it was here. No freight charge!

The local dealers get daily deliveries from their distribution centers, mostly Kansas City and Denver. I really think the local people are just passing on what is charged them, the suppliers are who makes the money. Not saying I can get something that big delivered overnight, as they probably don't sell that many mower decks, etc. And that might be a weekly delivery from another source. And, with the larger items, they probably make enough money so that shipping costs are not a big factor in their profit. On the other hand, when I order individual very heavy items shipped directly to me (aftermarket 3-point hitches come to mind), shipping adds 10-15% to the price. But, in general where you get taken is small items. It's best to consolidate my orders as much as possible, but it usually doesn't work out that way.

Last year I had the same thing happen to me but it was at Sears. I went to get a refrigerator door gasket. They were going to charge me freight. When I questioned them they said,as above, it isn't a stocked item. I told them if that was the case and I run their store I wouldn't stock anything and get that high shipping. BTW shipping wasn't cheaper than UPS. Can't remember now exactly but it was over 2 times the UPS rate. I ask if they would ship UPS and of course no. Since I live 35 miles from their store I said OK just send it to my home since you have to ship. That is when they told me it came with their regular goods and if I wanted it to go to my home, that would be a 2nd shipping charge. I left without the gasket and made a search on the internet and found one that was cheaper than theirs and saved nearly $20.00 because not only was it cheaper, shipping was cheaper and no sales tax because it was out of state. BTW, it fit perfectly.

I work in a LARGE insurance company's mailroom and I see what the negotiated rates are for UPS, and I know that any large shipper gets the same low rates. The charges most places charge have no connection to what they are actually paying to ship.

Curiously, I order Japanese language books from a bookstore in Hong Kong with free shipping and they are cheaper than any American bookstore before shipping is figured.

As to shipping, I was mostly talking about the local tractor dealers, not rip-off artists such as Sears and others where shipping is usually a major part of the cost, and where they make a lot of their money.

Our American shopping habits/budgets is mainly to blame. We have become a nation of penny pinching tight wads that could squeezze a tur* out of a buffalo head nickel. Folks want to run to Walmart and get everything that they stock to save a nickel, then expect the auto parts stores and tractor dealers to have all the hard to get things on-hand at reasonable prices. Look at a dealer's overhead, labor, 401k, medical, holidays, vacations, training, utilities, etc. They have to use a huge markup to even break even. No I am not a dealer or parts store owner, I am a farmer, but am sick and tired of hearing and seeing everyone trying to get the ultimate "deal" on everything they buy. Tom

Carquest seems to have a reputation for carrying hard to find, and truck, tractor items. NAPA is not too bad and I've had good luck with O'Riellys but advance and autozone are about useless. I buy filters from Advance because they carry Purolator. Local hardware/parts carrys wix but too expensive.

Best suggestion is to go online and find your part numbers before hand, then go shopping for those part numbers. I have labeled all my cars and equipment with the needed part numbers, i don't have to go look it up. I buy extras of filters, label the boxes as to what they fit, and store them in a plastic container to keep the dust, dirt and bugs out.

I just bought filters for my tractors from tractor supply (fram). Then I can go to Wal Mart or auto stores and have them cross reference them. Bought a filter from massey for $25 and got one a tractor supply for $6.99.

For $4 or $5 you can buy a filter cross reference Master catalog on eBay and look up filters on your own. You may even be able to get an "obsolete" one at the auto supply if you ask at the right time... when they're throwing them out in the trash. That means ask every time you're in the store. Don't turn down any other kind of catalog either. Tell'em your a collector.

I guess I don't understand the problem. I don't even think about auto parts stores when I want routine tractor parts. They come from Case-IH, or I order them from the internet/phone dealers that specialize in them. And, I order by part number so that there is no question that I get the right part, it's then their screwup and they will make it good -- doesn't happen very often. There are two long time formerly independent stores that are now "chain" stores that sell DuPont and PPG, along with a long time NAPA dealer that has had the same owner for 40 years that I consider reliable. The Carquest store, which is really a 50+ year old business/machine shop is Carquest in name only. They can find about anything, and is a good place to get engine kits, head work, cranks ground, etc. I don't rely on them for routine belts, filters, etc, although they probably have or can get them. They have quality employees (mostly, or at least there is one around that knows their inventory). Even there I do some cross checking to make sure they know what they are doing. I consider Advance and AutoZone junk stores.

Don't always blame the parts stores. The OEM's change designs to sell parts at inflated prices till the after market catches up. Why else are there so many parts doing the same thing? Improvements NOT.

The main reason for this is computors and paper pushers. No one wants to get in the parts busniess becasue they do not pay enough for a competant parts man to want to do the job, so they hire young kids at minimum wage. If the info they need is not in the computor, they cannot find it for you. Then the big Autozone, Advance, O'reailly auto stores only sell what a paper pusher knows what will sell, they only want to deal with high volume part numbers, and your old tractor filters, to them are not high enough volume for them to even mess with, and it is not in the computor, so they are lost. I dal some with a local O'reailly auto parts store, and about 20% of the time, we have to order the parts, return, then reorder, they cannot get the right parts the first time, and most of the time, they do not look it up correctly and do not read the additional notes. If I want paint for a tractor, I go to the farm store, get good paint, reasonable priced, and get good match from can to can.

The old stores had everything plus employees that could help with a problem . We have a new Advance auto parts store here & can you believe it ; they don't have paint materials or anything for paint shops except for spray cans (whoopie). Another problem is that the only store here that sells paint can't match up Ford tractor colors because they say it was a specialty of Dupont & they sell Sherwin/Williams paints . Now what ? Ken

Tractor colors are a guess. The PPG/DuPont/Sherwin Williams codes, at least the old ones, originated by taking a part or picture in to someone and having the color "matched". All three of the major manufacturers, and maybe some smaller ones such as Valspar can cross another manufacturer's color to theirs. However you can be assured that it will NOT be an exact match, nor will any of them be the same color that a 50 year old tractor had on it, which itself varied from one batch of paint to the next. The tractor manufacturers, at least for the 40's/50's tractors that I work on did not supply the paint company with a "formula" nor did they have the computerized systems that the current dealers/manufacturers have to at least get a respectable match to the OEM paint. Even today, if you take a car to a high line body shop with an honest owner, he will not promise you that he can get the exact match, although in a couple of incidents I have had the past 10 years, they can get pretty close. Not so with old tractor colors.

Also, you might take a look at the link, courtesy of Rod(NH). Those are PPG codes, but at least you will have a code to give to your Sherwin Williams dealer. Those people are computer connected to their corporate office, I bet they can find your color, I'm not saying it will be correct. You can also have them change the ratio of the toners in their mix until you are satisfied -- that method is not cheap, however.
