dry chemical extingishers

Is there a way a guy can refill his own 5-10 lbs extingushers with dry chem.? I need to fill some that the test code is out dated. I think old is better than none at all I don't have the money to get new and want be able to refill my own. bjr

Yes, leave the testing and refilling to the pros. You can periodically tap the canister with a rubber mallet to loosen the powder inside and shake it around some also. The powder eventually cakes and settles hard and when you need it and extinguisher will either plug or all the CO2 will come out first. Money is better spent on the refillable ones with metal valves than the cheap ones. Plastic gets old on those cheap ones and they are a throw away item.

They're filled with Nitrogen to reduce the moisture problems (as opposed, say, to air).

Leave the filling to a pro. You cannot refill an extinguisher with a plastic top, they're disposable. Cylinders need to be hydrostatically tested periodically, The cost of testing equip. makes refilling impractical.
