I am also planning a Earth Bermed House, Construction will start this Spring here in Michigans Thumb. I am planning on Frost-Protected insulated shallow foundation,Pex ran for the nice in floor water heat. However I will be forced to be off Grid-counting on a hybred solar/ wind/ Generator Power supply. My main heat source will be my beloved woodstove which I have dragged with me for my last 2 moves. (Hopefully add some tubing to heat the water for my Pex System to use the in floor heat). I have a beautiful clean and clear Spring for water. A little backwoods Yes! But it will be paradise for me and my family.

Sounds Great.

Being off grid poses additional challenges for you.

I have considered ways to use a fireplace or stove to add head to the PEX system... such as coils around the stove or pipes hidden in a stone/brick fireplace. One concern I have is the possibility of water getting too hot. I haven't read to much about this, but it's a great idea. What type of piping were you considering ? How would you couple it to the boiler/PEX system ?

I am still looking into this, this will be tricky since my woodstove will be in the center of the New House. Im thinking copper tubing either wrapped around the stove pipe (Ive seen this done, but it could cause the chimney to cool causing cresote buildup) or in the woodstove its self.I will probally run copper from the woodstove to the inlet side of the Boiler. As I say Im still looking into the best way to do this...
