It's the diff lock. Stepping on it while the wheels are turning results in a big pile of shavings. It should only be engaged when the clutch is pushed in. When you need more traction, push in the clutch, wait for the wheels to stop, step on the pedal, release the clutch. If you remove your foot from it once the wheels start turning, it will lock the differential together until it sees the load even out, then it will release the lock (ie its self unlocking). If you need it to dog thru a field with local sticky spots you can stand on it until you are all the way thru, and it will stay locked.

Be warned, if you have a heavy load on the 3 point the front steering will be light and the tractor will not turn, and steering with the brakes is disabled. Darned near killed myself with diff lock, boom pole with the front of an El Camino, an inch of wet snow, and a large tree. Almos as exciting as the 3 bottom mounted plow, uphill grade, and no front weights. Wasn't sure if it would go over backwards or fall over sideways. In both cases RAPID applicaton of the clutch saved the day and my ****.

Scary stuff! I think I won't try the differential lock until I'm more familiar with the driving of this tractor. Just got it and it will be assigned to snowblowing this winter. I used to do with with my little Ford NAA, should be really easy this year. Thanks for sharing.
