Don't get ahead of yourself there. If you haven't had either the head or oil pan off, you don't know that you need rings or pistons. Actually you don't know exactly what you need, not yet.

I posted above because you're now dealing with Oli guys that live, breath, and understand Oli's. But you gotta lay it on the line for them and run down everything that's goin on. You're gonna have these guys lookin in the wrong places, and that aint gonna help you or them.

How's that compression? How're them valves movin with the cover off? Any of them not? Any of them not actin like the others? Don't be in such a hurry to go after the bottom end until you've cleared the top end.

You're in the hands of the Oli doctors now, but gotta be straight with them before they can help.

Good luck.

Mark, I checked the tractor out this weekend. I checked the oil and no metal or anything else in it. I took offt the intake and exhaust manifold and checked the push rods. They were working correctly. I noticed that the no. 1,4,5, &6 had oil on them so I then checked the plugs. Only the no. 2 & 3 plugs were firing (sure seemed to be running better than that though. Anyway, I replaced the four bad plugs, but the manifolds back on and the engine started running great. After a few minutes most of the smoke was gone. I ran it again yesterday and still continued to run good. thanks for your help. I have another question if you are famalier with this tractor. What weight oil goes in the 3pt lift? thanks

Mark, thanks but I wasn't going to order any parts yet, just trying to get information together. I wanted to be sure that the parts were available before i tackled this. For sure I want to eliminate other sourses of the problem first because going into the engine is the last thing I want to do. I appreciate your comments and I will follow up when I have some more information. I don't have a compression tester but will probably will get one soon and I will check the valves first. I sure hope it isn't the rings/piston. I've only had the tractor a little over a week. the guy I bought it from said it ran great and the first few times I ran it it did run good. I've done a good bit of minor repairs to tractors in the last few years but I have not tackled a motor job yet.

There is a 1650 gas not too far from here that has M & W pistons in it, so the parts are totaly different. What is the problem with your engine? Could be something as simple as valve seals.

J., I provided additional information above but got the engine running good. Can you tell me what weight oil goes in the 3 pt lift. The reservoir in front of the seat was low and I added some 90 weight universal oil. The 3 pt started working but yesterday it was not working. Did I put the wrong weight in? thanks

J., It was running fine when I purchased it a couple weeks ago. the exhault pipe was not attached so I screwed it into the manifold and it started to smoke and oil is now coming out the manifold. I took the pipe back out but is still having oil come out the manifold and the tractor now has a miss in one or two cylnders.
