Last night we tried using the PTO for the first time. I could get it to spin while the tractor was moving (PTO selector lever in ground position (all the way foreward) I could not get it to go all the way back, i would just hear gears hitting eachother. I tried doing this with my foot on and off the clutch. I also tried doing it while the drive shaft was spinning. (I did this by driving with the pto on, then trying to switch it all the way in the far back position. I still got gear grind. I also tried shifting it all the way back with the tractor off and getting someone to rotate the drive shaft by hand. I also did this with my foot on and off the clutch. I still couldnt get it to enguage. Also while the PTO was in the drive position, it didnt have enough torque to do any work (i was trying to use a little shredder) all i was doing was knocking the leaves off the plants i was trying to shred. I'm thinking that either i'm doing something wrong or the clutch is bad.

Also i dont know if it is PTO related, but what does that little lever under the steering wheel, by the key switch do. Its left of the key switch, kinda in the middle.

The manual says: "..between the plate fingers and the adjusting bolt head"

I've never done this, just relating what I've read. My guess is the gap you marked "these screws?" at the bottom center of your picture.
Good luck.

Steve

Steve

for a temporary fix, i pulled the driveshaft off of the pto, and while rotating it, i pulled on the lever to put it in gear. It jumped right into gear. I was out trying to adjust the clutch. I was wondering where do i need to put the feeler guage to adjust the gap. I'm assuming its between the PTO friction plate and the pto pressure plate. Below is a pic attached.

So I now got the PTO to enguage, with a bit of finagling. But i figured i'd go ahead and take it back over to the house for some maintance. When i loaded it on the trailer oil was leaking out of the weephole between the engine and the transmission. So I'm thinking its a rear main seal. If it aint one thing its another....

Mine did the same grinding. You have to really push down on the clutch I mean real hard.

Then it is definatly a UK model. It has the emblems at the front of the hood, and a tractometer instead of a tach. Interesting to know. Thanks for the info.

I doubt its a UK model. I was talking about the lever that allows you to put in in ground, neutral or drive. It does have the multispeed transmission in it.

On UK models the multi-power lever is under the steering wheel. The easiest way to tell is that UK models have the 135 emblem at the front of the hood and US models have it at the back. UK models also have a tractormeter instead of just a tach. Dave

The lever you talk about sounds like the multi-power lever. Is your tractor a UK model? Ground speed PTO isn't used for much. The tractor has to be moving for it to turn. By the sounds of it something needs adjusting with your clutch or the PTO shifter. On mine I usually have to play with the clutch just a little to get everything lined up. I always engage the PTO at idle. The clutch has to be down to engage the PTO. Dave

When i tried to shift back i did have the clutch pushed down all the way. I am going to pull the clutch plate off this weekend and try to adjust it.

When trying to shift the PTO lever back, did you have the clutch pedal all the way to the foot rest? My 2 stage clutch only disengages the last inch or 2 from the bottom and needs to be down all the way to shift into gear. Have you previously pulled the PTO shift plate off? If you have, see link below.
HTH and Good luck.
