135 PTO clutch

I tried to engage the PTO on the 135 as normal by depressing the 2 stage clutch completely and moving the lever toward the back of the tractor. The lever felt like it engaged something, but the PTO shaft does not turn. I tried engaging in ground PTO and nothing as well. I shut of the tractor and tried to turn the shaft by hand. It seems to be locked in gear with just a little slop as one would expect from 2 gears meshing. I could not turn the shaft at all. Is this normal? My Fords PTOs can be manually turned when not engaged. 1. It's below freezing here, can this be a problem? 2. I've had the tractor for several months and used the PTO before and it worked ok. I did drain the hydraulic oil and inspect the filter and don't remember using the PTO after that. Could I have not installed the lever correctly when replacing it on the tractor? I'll do more searching and wait for your kind responses before I tear into anything.

Thanks
Steve IA

Almost sure you don't have the lever engaged. It needs to fit on groove in the gear. Its in front of the gear so it can push it into gear but can't pull it out.

Its a pain to get it back right.

Spot on. Pulled the cover, stuck my hand in the freezing cold oil and found the gear and the slot and lined it up and bolted the plate on. Glad it was nothing major. Thanks to you and DavidP for the responses.

Been there, done that. Just once. Knew to do the next time the first time I put the cover back on.

Hello,
I think Gerald is correct with his diagnosis. It is easy to refit the cover and not have the selector in the groove.
With the engine stopped;
Move the lever to neutral. You should be able to turn the PTO. If you cannot, have an assistant press the clutch pedal to the floor. It should now turn. If it does not it is possible that the PTO plate is stuck as well. Please let us know what you find.
