Hey Mark.
I bought a sender at an Advance Auto parts. They are an (almost) generic part. It was described as a "five hole sending unit". ( I think it has five holes, maybe six, but the part fit. It was adjustable for the depth of the tank. As I recall, they had to call the 'old guy' to the counter since nobody can look for a part without knowing everything about your car.
Anyway, before electronics and elctric fuel pumps these things were common in cars.
A good auto parts guys can easily get one for you. Good Luck!

Had to go to NAPA. Brought it home and started modifying it to fit tank.

Problem with tank is that it is only 5" deep where the sending unit mounts. That means a very short wire to the float. Must be why they recommend OEM instead of aftermarket.

Won't believe this but I got everything adjusted to work up and down in 5" on the bench and installed the unit. Tank was half full, but gauge read E.

Investigation revealed that, due to the short distance from the resistance element to the float, the float didn't have enough ballast to float the interconnecting parts. You know, the old foot/lbs things. No feet (short rod) so need lots of lbs of lift.

Oh well, this afternoon I may take the float off the old one and see if I can get rid of some metal on the arm and reduce the weight so that it'll float. Otherwise it works fine by hand..... just gotta get the float to float.

Also, the hole to insert it is not that large so I can't add another float to get double the lift.

Mark

Monday or Tuesday the one from Walt's should be here as I ordered it anyway. Figured I could "engineer" it to work.

If not it's as you say...off to NAPA for a generic.

Thanks,

Mark
