What determines need for new belts? Age of belts or number of bales? There are other factors than belts that affect starting of a rd. bale. Tx Jim

I'm convinced that the pattern on the belt is essential to easy starting as is what I think to be an open throat vs closed throat design.

On when to replace..... as happened to me last year on old baler..... when you look back and you are missing a front tooth (belt gone) and it is no where to be found.....hiding inside the last bale you rolled.

Otherwise when the tie points get worn out and the belt looks like a "remnant quilt (bedspread)" from repairs. Grin.

But get out your wallet. You can easily spend $1800 on 3 ply diamond shaped belts for a JD baler. I spent $1200 on mine (old one) last year and didn't have near the quality of the current JD.

If a bale has a verticle chamber like a Hesston or JD the traction on the belts is parimount. The traction cleats on the belt turn the bale. If the belts are worn the baler will not take hay as good as it used to and in some conditions you will not be able to start a bale. Belts have a shelf life just as any other synthetic rubber product has. They will become brittle with age and even delaminate and separate from the cords. This varies according to how the baler is stored. Direct sun light does increase the oxidation process. Some belts are worn out at 8 years and some at 15 years of use.

Totally agree. A baler needs to be under a shed or in a barn if you want to keep your pocket book in your pocket.
