That just happened here. New regional management at fertilizer company is not honoring the pre-book at lower prices. Choice is take your money back or pay higher. Only 2 places to buy fertilzer in bulk around here, and the other guys didn"t take pre-orders this year. I haven"t been able to lock a price on diesel for the past 2 years, either. None of the suppliers want to do it anymore.

I had to change suppliers this spring because of it. Local co-op was being pushed from corporate to not pre book. Having to haul 10 miles further but actually saved significantly on N. Last year he had sold 11,000 tons prepay. They realized too late the the business was gone as the other dealers were filling the needs. Petroleum dealers used to really scream about offering prepay, now th only three bulk distributors left are the one that offered it. They do what the fertilizer dealers do, when we pay, they order it. Its actually 'my' stuff in the bins. Catch is, what I dont use I lose (and they get to resell at the higher in season price).

The coops are saying they will no longer be able to get fert delivery when they call - they will need to pre-book fert 9 months to 12 months in advance, & will need to know how much we will buy as well. Or no one will be happy. They figure they can get through this year, but by next year we need to lock in or face 'nothing to buy'.

Fuel coop talks about pre-booking fuel at _every_ meeting. I went there after one of the meetings and asked about it, they said no contracts at this time, they will put me on a list & contact me when one can prebook. That was 2 years ago, & 3-4 more meetings where they say we all should be pre-booking. Still haven't called me back tho....
