There are many good choices in used hay equipment. First looking for a mower your choices are:
-Sicklebar mower- (single action) Mowers like the belt driven NH 451 are the standard here. There are other good choices even with Ford 501 pitman mowers. This technology was developed in 1880"s and will not mow grass when wet.
-Sicklebar mower- (Double action) The double action mowers have greater capacity for mowing but are higher maintenance and less durable. Developed in the 1950"s
-Haybine- New Holland has led this market since the late 1950"s. Hesston, Gehl, & IH and not far behind. JD made it"s mark with drawbar dirt-working implements and has always been playing catch-up in the haytools category. The JD1207 & 1209 units are solid and work best in alfalfa.
Flail or Cut Conditioners- Mathews & New Idea are the most notable. These units take considerable more HP to operate.
-Drum Mowers- These mowers were the forerunner of the disc mowers. The drum mower shears the crass clean off leaving less damage to the plant so you will have quicker return growth than any sicklebar mower. They will mow any hay in any condition. You can mow in the evening with a heavy dew, in the morning or even in the rain. This gives an operator the capacity to mow before or after work in less than ideal conditions for sickle bar mowers or haybines. The cost of a drum mower is 40-60% less than a disc mower. New ones start are $2,000 and can be used on small tractors in the 20-40 HP range. 2-5 acres per hour
-Disc mowers- The disc mower has all the capacity of the drum mowers but in larger sizes.
-Discbine mower conditioners- a disc mower with a conditioner.
