Hello folks,

I"m in the market for a used haybine, prefer deere 1209,1219 ( I used my neighbors, & it worked well). I have only a handfull of Angus cows, but I got burnt buying hay last Spring, so I"m doing my own hay now, only around 15 acres. I purchased a new holland 851 round baler last summer for $1200.00, needed teeth & guards,ehich I put on, but is working well. Next I need the haybine, rake, tedder. I know New Holland makes a good haybine too, just looking for your recommendations. I would like to keep the cost of the haybine to @ $1000.00, rake & tedder to @ $500.00 each.

There are many good choices in used hay equipment. First looking for a mower your choices are:
-Sicklebar mower- (single action) Mowers like the belt driven NH 451 are the standard here. There are other good choices even with Ford 501 pitman mowers. This technology was developed in 1880"s and will not mow grass when wet.
-Sicklebar mower- (Double action) The double action mowers have greater capacity for mowing but are higher maintenance and less durable. Developed in the 1950"s
-Haybine- New Holland has led this market since the late 1950"s. Hesston, Gehl, & IH and not far behind. JD made it"s mark with drawbar dirt-working implements and has always been playing catch-up in the haytools category. The JD1207 & 1209 units are solid and work best in alfalfa.
Flail or Cut Conditioners- Mathews & New Idea are the most notable. These units take considerable more HP to operate.
-Drum Mowers- These mowers were the forerunner of the disc mowers. The drum mower shears the crass clean off leaving less damage to the plant so you will have quicker return growth than any sicklebar mower. They will mow any hay in any condition. You can mow in the evening with a heavy dew, in the morning or even in the rain. This gives an operator the capacity to mow before or after work in less than ideal conditions for sickle bar mowers or haybines. The cost of a drum mower is 40-60% less than a disc mower. New ones start are $2,000 and can be used on small tractors in the 20-40 HP range. 2-5 acres per hour
-Disc mowers- The disc mower has all the capacity of the drum mowers but in larger sizes.
-Discbine mower conditioners- a disc mower with a conditioner.

Have you ridden up to Scheese's up north of shiloh? Mugsy usually has a decent amount of used stuff and is very knowledgable. Also B&J farms has a pretty big sale in march, saw a couple used pieces of hay equipment there.

I work as a crop consultant in that area.

I"m up in Hunterdon County. I"ve got a 1209 sitting here that I don"t use since I"ve upgraded machines. Missing a skid shoe, rollers not perfect but should last awhile. Got OM/PM/SM set in a binder to go with it. I can get you digital pics if interested.

My tedder actually cost more than my haybine - it's a NH 162 4 spinner that I paid $1000 for at auction. Tedders aren't cheap. My haybine is JD 480 which I bought for $150 and put another $350 into it fixing it up. The 480 was Deere's first mower-conditioner and doesn't have a very good reputation, but mine does a good job and is a step up from a sickle bar. You should be able to get an old steel wheel 4 bar rake cheap that would work good for 15 acres - I have a Deere 594 which I got for $125.

I looking for a set of used crimper rubber bsrs for a New Holland 490 haybine. Has anybody changed a set? How big of a job is it?

In my area you can find NH 489s for around $1000 and most still have a lot of life in them
