i would like to spread some lime on my field, I could get the stuff spread or just have it trucked over and spread it myself which would be a lot cheaper. Will a fertilizer spreader work for lime? I could borrow a drum type that is mounted on the tractors 3 pt. or do I have to use a special lime spreader?

I wish I had a place local to buy lime for 6.00 / ton. I pay around 20 in bulk having to spread it myself, or 28.00 / ton spread in 20 ton loads. As for spreading it myself, I didn't have much trouble. I used my salt sand spreader that goes in my pick up. I had a friend from up the road just stand in the back with a shovel and watch as I drove around. He just knocked the pile around a little every once in a while to keep it from tunnling like was mentioned. I have it spread now though, by the time I trucked it, loaded it, and spread it, I too was working for under a dollar a ton. The other nice thing is, you tell the lime guys you want 2 tons / acre, and you get 2 tons / acre. Try that spreading it yourself. Good luck with what ever you decide.

A lot depends on the amount you need and what your time is worth. If you need a lot of lime per acre it wants to tunnel out in a regular fertilizer buggy. I just hire it done. It costs me $6.00 per ton to have it trucked in and dumped (for a 25 ton load) and then I have to fool with it. Spread is under $12.00 per ton. The two times I tried doing it myself I wound up working for about 50 cents and hour.

Peter,
There was a similar question asked on the Ford N board a couple of days ago. If you wanted to build something click the link by Dell WA to see some plans for a home made spreader.
