I had a bulldozer come in to clear some timber for a food plot. The soil sample indicated I needed 3 ton of lime per acre and its a 1 1/2 acre plot. The lime kept plugging the broadcaster up. I dont think a truck can get back to the plot. How do you normally do this? Is there another implement I need?
Thanks Mark

Mark, I have a rotary spreader that I have used for all types of lime. It holds 500 lbs. and does a good job. Mine has a shaker, which is a wheel at the end of a metal rod that goes around the inside of the spreader and keeps the lime loose. Is your lime wet? Do you have a shaker on your spreader? Is it a 3 pt. hitch spreader? I believe mine is a King Kutter, but not sure, it's 60 miles from me at camp. Maybe try less lime in it so it doesn't pack up. Good Luck. Ron

Hey Mark. Dearborn made a couple of Lime & Fertilizer spreaders, with grass seed attachments. The Model 20-5 came out for the 8N around 1949. Only problem is that, if they were not maintained (cleaned well after each usage), many would have rusted out long ago. Here's info on this model from a 1950 ad slick that I have:

Dearborn followed that with the Series 801 Lime and Fertilizer Spreader, which was manufactured during the NAA and Hundred Series timeframe:

If you can find something like these, at a decent price, and ensuring that they were properly maintained, you could use it for a variety of needs. Wouldn't take long to take care of your 1½ acre plot with it.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

I have used what they call pelletised lime it will go through your spreader with no problem but it costs a lot more than that powdery stuff .

Mark..... .....agriculture lime doesn't spread worth a darn from a 3-point whirly-gig spreader. (its too finely powdered) You might want to check out this lime spreader for ideas. Takes a couple of minutes to load, be patient.

But if'n it were me, I'd just toss out a 50# bag of lime every couple of feet, off the back of my pickup, then go back and break open the bag and give it a dump, maybe kick it around a bit. Maybe drag a couple of RR-ties or something heavy around to help spread itt.

So what if its NOT UNIFORMLY applied. The agriculture cops gonnna arrest ya? naw, don't think so..... ...Dell

Mark answerd you on implement list then thougt a bit. What kind of lime are you using. Lime will clog up easily but Calcium Nitrate Granulated won't and also has the advantage of slow dispersal. They both do the same thing. If you have time old sheetrock/gypsomboard will work just till it in after winter,
