Going to look and possibally buy a 4 row planter. It is a conventional (not no till) planter Ford 352 plate planter. I was curious as to how much drawbar HP is required to pull a pull type planter? Is it so much HP per row?
thanks in advance,
Brian

I pulled my John Deere 1240 4 row with my John Deere 520. Unless i was going up a hill, it never had to work hard.

We went through this same question last month.

I pulled a JD 7000 4 row doing no till and putting down 17 gallons of 32% fertilizer at the same time planting corn last year with my MF-135, and never ran it past a fast idle. It didn't work hard.

There's a picture of the pair after planting was done on the link with other discussion.

A 4 row doesn't pull hard, unless it's no-till, or you're in mud (planting in mud isn't good anyway) Grandpa used to pull an old 4 row JD with either his Jubilee or a Super H Farmall, and later a 456 IH 4-row with the Super H (Jubilee didn't have remote hydraulics) Those are both just over 30 h.p. at the pto, probably around 25 at the drawbar. Newer, heavier planters, like a JD 7000/7200, need a little bigger tractor simply because they are heavier. I used a Ford 4600 (52 pto h.p.)when I had a 4 row 7000.

Thanks for the replies, I feel better knowing that. I plan on pulling it with a Ford 3910 which has about 38 HP on the bar. Yes I will post photos when I get a chance, thanks again,
Brian

That'd be perfect.

Can get by with 25hp, but you would be going a little slow if you need to beat the rain....
