TEST the Milo for NITRATE Level

Milo never headed out? Drought stressed? You better take some test samples in to a crop lab to test nitrate levels before you spend time and money haying it. Some around here failed to do that 2 years ago on stressed milo and wound up burning the hay after baling it because even after winter nitrate levels hadn't gone down enough. You may have to wait for a rain for some to head out or wait till a week or two after a frost and then nitrates usually go down enough but still don't be cutting it too close to the ground. You bale it up with too nitrates too high and it's nothing but poision feed for a long time. After taking the hay off stressed milo get the stalk nubs plowed under too and don't be lettin any cattle out on it as even tillers and stalk nubs and roots can poison them.

Well the field was frist planted in wheat and then they decided (not my field but a friend's) decided it was not going to make a wheat crop so they plowed it under and planted Milo in late April first of May time frame.

Milo has gotten one rain on it and that is it, it does have some heads on it, but insurance came out last week and told them they can do what ever they want to with the field as it was a failed crop.
I think I am going to go about 50 50 between corn bales and milo bales and feed a a few of each at a time. Hoepfully I have a little good grass hay also to feed.
One other thing I got a friend that going to rake the corn stalks for me, netiher one of us knows what the going share rate should be. Right now I am giving one bale for ever 3 I bale ( 2/3 I keep) to the farmer. and I have a friend that is just going to rake and then I bale behind him. Not sure what be a fair share rate for him as neither of us has ever just raked for someone any idea?
