OT. Corn bales and milo bales

Going to start baling corn behind the combine. Not going to cut it just rake and bale what the combine throws out. Another guy been doing this and is getting 2 bales per acre on 6X5 bales. I also got around 80 acres of milo (never been harvested, failed to make a head) I am going to cut and bale. Hoping to make 1.5 bales to 2 bales acre on this.
My question, is I never had corn bales before, how good are they compared to milo stalks? I have feed milo stalks before and they worked out ok, but was wondering which be better to have corn bales or milo bales. I can bale about as much as I want of the corn. I did yank a couple of the corn stalks ( completely dead and dried out and gave it to my cows they seem to really like it)
Hay is very short this year and we are baling anything around here. Heard going price for corn and milo bales around 40 to 50 dollars and seen allot of them being hauled around here.

Milo never headed out? Drought stressed? You better take some test samples in to a crop lab to test nitrate levels before you spend time and money haying it. Some around here failed to do that 2 years ago on stressed milo and wound up burning the hay after baling it because even after winter nitrate levels hadn't gone down enough. You may have to wait for a rain for some to head out or wait till a week or two after a frost and then nitrates usually go down enough but still don't be cutting it too close to the ground. You bale it up with too nitrates too high and it's nothing but poision feed for a long time. After taking the hay off stressed milo get the stalk nubs plowed under too and don't be lettin any cattle out on it as even tillers and stalk nubs and roots can poison them.

Well the field was frist planted in wheat and then they decided (not my field but a friend's) decided it was not going to make a wheat crop so they plowed it under and planted Milo in late April first of May time frame.

Milo has gotten one rain on it and that is it, it does have some heads on it, but insurance came out last week and told them they can do what ever they want to with the field as it was a failed crop.
I think I am going to go about 50 50 between corn bales and milo bales and feed a a few of each at a time. Hoepfully I have a little good grass hay also to feed.
One other thing I got a friend that going to rake the corn stalks for me, netiher one of us knows what the going share rate should be. Right now I am giving one bale for ever 3 I bale ( 2/3 I keep) to the farmer. and I have a friend that is just going to rake and then I bale behind him. Not sure what be a fair share rate for him as neither of us has ever just raked for someone any idea?

Milo will generally have more nutritional value, but the cows will eat the heck out of the corn stalks as well. Good roughage, need to put out some protein tubs or molasses to supplement.

Your situation sounds exactly like ours here in Central Tx, baling up everything in sight.

Unless you grind the cornstalks my cows never eat anymore than just the leaves. The milo will make very good feed. In a short feed year I bale up anything that will make a turd. Supplement with shelled corn.

Take the side off your bushhog and cut the cornstalks . It will 2x the bales and as Paul said alot easyer on the equipment .

Milo is unheard of here, so can't compare.

Here with 175bu corn, we need to chop the corn stalks, typically rake 4 rows together, & bale it. My cattle will eat on the corn stalks for about 1/2 a bale before touching the alfalfa bale I put in the feeder with it.

I'd not want to abuse the side rake or baler pickup by not runnig a corn stalk chopper first...

JM Here in Iowa alot guys are baling corn stalks after combining and supplementing with corn gluten.

Thats all they are feeding and it seems to be working well.

Gluten is easily available here from all the ethanol plants.

Back on the farm in Kansas when I was a kid we baled unheaded milo now and then and when we sent in the tests it came back as very good feed value. But you usually don't get alot of tonnage out of it.
