One of the phenomena happening in the forage industry is the increasing level of Ash being found in forages. Most attribute this to the increased usage of disc mowers in forage production. Some, my self included, feel that the prevalent use of wheel rakes exacerbates the issue.

At the Hay Expo in Strawberry Point, Iowa last week several rakes were demoes. Each of the wheel rakes resulted in chunks of soil in the windrow, while the Vermeer hydraulic bar rake did not have the same occurance. The easy explanation is that the wheel rakes were not adjusted correctly, but that can not be the entire answer.

I would look at the type of customer you have and the time factore. If you are simply selling "brood cow" hay, then a wheel rake will produce the results you want.

Well, I do three things with my hay, round bales for my own horses and cows, that are not picky. Sell a few big rounds to a few horse friends of ours. And I make small squares that my wife and my mother use in their horse boarding operation(about 40-50 horses).
