Steering gearbox maintenance

Hey guys, does any one know if there is any periodic maintenance required on the steering gear box under the instrument panel of my 1955 TO-35? The tractor is not equipped with power steering. The gear box (I assume that's what it is) is the unit in which the shaft from the steering wheel connects down into and the two "pitman arms" (automotive term) come out of. I don't see any grease fittings or drain plugs. The steering on my tractor is surprisingly precise and easy, and I would like to keep it that way. Any info/suggestions would be appreciated.

There should be a greaser on the top bearing, maybe under the rubber collar. The oil is engine oil or use GL190w if you want to..its the same grade. Filler is sometimes on the top of the box but under the battery, you can drain it by taking out the bottom setscrew on the left side on some. The top bearing needs to be adjusted to stop the column lifting. Sparex do bearing kits for this box and sector parts too.

Lance. Go to the thread titled "TO-30 5/S speed Trans" below and you will see a photo of the top of my TEA20 gear box. The steering box oil filler plug can be seen, right of picture. I guess a TO30 is similar?

The TEA steering box is very simple and rugged and I guess your TO30 is similar. The only problems which seem to occur with the TEA steering box is: the seals (and possibly bushes) on the drop arm shafts ("Pitman arms") leak; and the top bearing on the steering rod (under the steering wheel cap) fails due to rust and no lubrication. Both are relatively simple to repair/replace.

Purists repair, farmers fill the steering box with grease! LOL

Hey Bob, where is the "thread" where I can see the picture of your steering gearbox? I don't see it anywhere on the screen. Yeah, I frequently fill leaking and/or worn out gearboxes with grease myself.

Thanks Bob, now I see the picture. It looks similar to what I have, I'll have to see if mine has a fill plug in the same place. Is there a drain plug also? Is the correct lube for the steering box the same GL-1 90 wt. as used in the transmission?
