I just picked up my 1951 TO-30. My first ferguson. It has a sherman combo trans. The tractor is not running. On top of the trans by the gear shifter is a 4 speed pattern with rev. Up and to the right is what looks to be an S. Is this for starting or do you put it in S to engage the sherman trans.

"S" = Start. Don't try it with the engine running! LOL

Sorry. Didn't notice it was a TO30 - not familiar with the TO20/TO30.

If it has a switch in the top of the bell housing as per the photo it will be the Start position.

So just move the shifter lever forward on the "S" and that will engage the starter?

Kirk. If it is the same as my TEA20, yes, engage the starter by moving the gear lever to the "S" position.

Kirk. I can't comment on the TO30 but this is the gear box cover on my TEA20. In my case, "S" is the starter engage position.

Please excuse the chrome gear lever, but as any teenager will tell you, a chrome gear lever adds 20 MPH to the top speed!
