Unless somebody has done some pretty interesting work to your TO-30, it ain't a 5 speed, it is a 4 speed with 1 reverse gear. What you think is a "5" is actually an "S" and should be located directly above the reverse gear.

The T0-30's had this as a safety feature to prevent the tractor from being started in gear. Basically you turn the ignition switch to "On" or "Run" and then push the gear shift lever to "S" to crank it over. Probably, at some point, the switch went out and somebody replaced yours with a different type of switch.

As for your clutch, I don't know. Do you think that the clutch is stuck cause it won't go into "5th" gear or is there some other reason?

Glad to know I ain"t the only one who got a "5" speed...

One of the days soon the 9N will be fixed and then I can start on the TO-20...

I stand corrected. I suppose it could be "Hup and Howard gears" and I must admit, I don't know anything about them. I'd be interested to know which it was, "Hup and Howard gears" or mistaking the "S" for a "5".

The Hup auxillery transmission is similiar to a Sherman trans. This one in particular has a high range, a low range and direct drive. The Howard gear reducer hooks into the rear axle and slows the tractor speed while keeping the PTO up to speed when using a tiller. With all these fancy levers, I can use 24 gears forward and 6 reverse.
The top speed with the Hup in high range is about 25 MPH. Slow speed at 1,000 RPM should be around .37 MPH...
All this with a Howard rotovator tiller set me back $1800...Even came with a bad starter and a messed up ring gear.
I have blown the budget on repairing a 9N and so the TO-20 is waiting in the yard...

when i first looked at it i thought it looked like a S ,but couldnt figure why.,,the clutch pedal is barely moveable and has no effect. i dont know how long it has set but i have never seen anything so rusty.any ideas on the clutch? thanks ,,joe

If the clutch pedal is hard to press then the engine will have to come out and the clutch cross-shaft be taken out and cleaned up....it is sticking in the bushes through the clutch housing. You can check the clutch while it is apart too. If you need the information to take the engine out email me at:-

I don't know about the clutch. Does it start? Can you check it that way? I don't know, perhaps more tractor-experienced fellas on here can help out.

we got the tractor split in half, and the bushing were seezed up,we cleaned them but it is still a lil stiff,is that ok?not back together yet. Anything we should do while it is apart. we are going to replace the ring gear,how do you do this and replace it?thanks ,joe
