I just bought a MF TO-35. The decal says its a "Special", but I can't seem to match up the serial number with anything. A neighbor mentioned its a TO-35 Deluxe...how can I tell the difference? Also, what are the NAPA paint codes for this tractor??? Anyone know?

Contrary to your conclusion that it is a "Deluxe", I would say that it is a "Special". The Deluxe had a serial number that started with SGM, not SGF (which was the Special). Furthermore, you indicate that it does not have live PTO. All Deluxes had live PTO. One confusing point, however; you stated that it had the "two-stage clutch". If you had that, it would have live PTO and a serial number that started with SGM, not SGF. You may want to get this cleared up before you start buying parts for it. J2

Thats the curious part...It has a two stage, and it has spinouts and it has a tach...but it doesn't have live pto. I'm wondering if this particular tractor is a "transition type" between the special and the deluxe.

There is no point in having a two-stage clutch without a live PTO.. it would not do anything but cost more.. and the spinouts were a common option.. My first TO-30 came from the dealer that way in 1952... J2 :-)

This is a mystery indeed. The serial number plate reads, SGF178122. According to Ferguson numbers, this indicates S=standard, G=gas, F=single stage...but mine is definately two stage and, like I mentioned, has a tach and spin outs...is there anywhere else where I can find a serial number, or are there any other identifying features that can determine exactly what this MF35 is?

Hi John;

You're not the only one with a mystery combination.
My '57 TO-35 (SGF tag) has 4 gauges, power steering, live PTO, padded seat, BUT a single-stage clutch. A Deluxe w/out the dual-stage.
Yours, like mine, may be a Deluxe, but it's "special" too. ;-)

Roger

It think that the most likely answer is that your tractor has been made out of two tractors at some time or another. Probably the major portion (but not the engine/clutch) was a Special, i.e. everything from the dash/bellhousing and behind was used off the special, but the engine/clutch/tach/etc. from a deluxe was used in the front. This explains why the Serial number is SGF but there is a two stage clutch (SGM) and no live PTO. As for the spinouts, they probably had better tires, so they used them.. Just speculation, of course.. J2

Hi J2;

Your speculation may not be far off the mark- at least I came up with a similar conclusion for my TO-35 ( see above reply to John). I may never know for sure...
Both you and John mention "spinouts". I'm not familiar with that term. Would you describe?
Thanks,

Roger

third party image

These are adjustable width rims that work by loosening clamping bolts and spinning the wheel so that it slides on the angled rail to bring the wheel in or out. This gives a continuous width variation instead of the 4" steps that you get with the standard rims. This picure is not very good, but all I could find in a couple of minutes. These were options as far back as 1952, maybe farther, but were standard equipment on the 35 Deluxe. The Special came stock with the usual 6 loop fixed but you could get the spinouts as an option. I have a TO 35 deluxe, and I agree with T, she is one working girl. She's almost like that pink bunny, just keeps on..... working.
Good Luck...

I have a '56 TO 35, not sure if it is a Deluxe of Special. But this I can say she is one hard working girl, never complains and just keeps on going. Enjoy and be safe

If serial number starts out "sgm..." it"s a deluxe. The third letter indicates multiple (two) stage clutch.

Thanks, fellas. Turns out its a deluxe...serial # starts with SGF, it has a two stage, spin outs, etc...It also has a tach, but no live PTO. Interestingly enough, according to an email I received, it turns out that this 35 was one of the first Deluxes', because the serial tag says Massey-Harris-Ferguson TO-35.

The 35 special did have a single clutch. Also came
standard with a metal seat,no tach.,no power shift
wheel and a few more. Some specials by now have
the foam float seat,p.s. wheels,etc as they could
be purchased as options. If any further questions
in more detail I can get a parts book out and compare more.Chuck

I think the Special only has a one-stage clutch. When you press down on the clutch do you notice that half way down there seems to be a "resting point"? If so it's the Deluxe.
