TO30 won't pick up round bales- did all winter.

I used my TO30 to pick up my round bales all winter. This spring I can't raise them over 3-4 inches. It stops raising at this point, but doesn't make any noise. I can't hear it bypassing due to an overload. I hear it will raise 750 lbs and I am buying the same bales I always do and they are always dry-never wet. It is possible they packed more hay in the roll, but I can't tell. What can I check as far as my lift system goes? Is there a screen that may need cleaning? I found my hydraulic fluid low and filled with the universal fluid from Tractor Supply. Is this fluid compatible? Any help would be appreciated. I'm in the middle of storing the winter hay and I don't have a service or parts manual to look at. Thanks ahead of time.

The capacity of the hydraulics is 800lbs at the end of the lower links. Most likely the weight is further back than that so it may be about right. To check the hydraulics you really need to check the hydraulic pressure to be sure that it is up to scratch on the pressure, it should read 2000psi, if it doesn't you would need to check for a leak inside. The correct oil is GL1 90 weight above 50 degrees air temperature, the oil should have no detergent in it that is why you need GL1, no other oil is suitable. If you can drain the oil when the tractor has been working for some time and it is hot then it will help to get all the crud out of it. The oil should be changed every 12 months and doing this avoids the build up of the dirty mess inside. The total amount of oil in this system is 24 quarts, no more no less. If you add this to the system it will be right on the mark, it does take a little while to flow from the gearbox, where the filler is, to the hydraulics and axle. If you need information on the hydraulic system, let me know as much as you can about the fault and I will send an information sheet on how to repair it, pictures too and parts list. What are the ambient temperatures you are operating at now versus those in winter? I suspect you may have a leak and with the combination of higher temperatures and thinner hydraulic fluid, you can't maintain the pressure in the lift cylinder. In the winter, when temperatures are colder, the oil viscosity is very high and helps reduce the any leakage from the lift cylinder. Not so in the summer time. Pull your right side coverplate and look up at the lift cylinder while you try to raise the 3 point. If you see a lot of fluid coming down you have a leak. You might try 90 W GL-1 to get you through the summer 'cuz the higher viscosity oil should reduce the leakge somewhat, but it's only a band aid and you'll eventually have to find the cause of the leak and repair it.

I just completed the drain/flush/fill for my TO-30. Same issues... Previous owner has filled with light weight hydraulic oil.

NAPA 65-205 (GL-1 90wt - $31) was in stock and so was the 1 gal size (65-201 -$7)... Five gallons will get you "on the stick" but you need 6 to get near the "full".

I called Tractor Supply here in JC, Tenn and they don"t carry any GL-1. All their hydraulic fluid is either 10w or 20w. I called the local Massey-Ferguson dealer and they had GL-1 but in a 20w only-he said he could special order a 90w for about the same price-28.95 for 5 gal. Would the 90w be okay for this part of the country? And would 5 gallons be enough to fill my tractor up? Thanks again.

Jay, I tried copying the link to a previous post from Jeff. Jeff has done his homework on finding the best price on GL-1. Check out NAPA, you might save yourself a few bucks. 5 gallons will probably get you running, but my experience has been you need closer to 6 gallons to get your tranny topped-off if you drain it down completely by pulling all the drain plugs, pushing the lift lever down, and letting everything drain out real good overnight.

I'm not a computer expert, If I messed up this link, go to the Archives above, search for GL-1, you will find lots of previous posts on this topic. Good luck.

Jay, you probably watered down your tranny oil with that thin universal hydro fluid junk. You need 90 wt GL-1 rated mineral oil for the combined tranny/hydraulics in your TO. TSC sells that also. Between the thinner oil and the warmer weather, you probably are not getting the pressure you were getting last Winter.

Lifting round bails with a TO is not a sure bet anyway, even with top notch hydraulics. My guess is the front of your TO probably does a bit of dancing when you lift a bail. All but the smallest bails are usually too heavy for the lift anyway.
