Estimating missing tractor serial numbers

I have been reading through the archives of this list and noticed several posts about people trying to determine the year and model of their Case when it is missing the serial number tag. Apparently placing the serial number tag on the dash was not the most durable solution, at least as not as durable as many of the old Cases are turning out to be. The engine number tag seems to be more durable as I have noticed several people have the engine serial number but not the tractor serial number. If I had the model, year, tractor serial number, engine type and size, and engine serial number for ten or so tractors of each model/engine type and size combination, I could develope a statistical model to predict the tractor serial number, with a confidence interval, from the engine serial number. It would not be perfect, but it would be a way to help people buy manuals and parts. It could even save a few of these wonderful machines from the scrap heap. If you would collect and send the following information for each Case you know and run across to jimgundlach@direcway.com, I will start building the models and post them when I get sufficent data.

The data: Model:_____ _ Year:_____ __ Tractor Serial Number:_____ _____ Engine type (gas etc):_____ _____ Engine size:_____ _____ _____ ____ Engine Serial Number:_____ _____ _

Thanks, Jim Gundlach

What tractors are you talking about on the earlier pre 1953 tractors the serial number on the back of the engine and the tag on the dash are the same number, if not then they have been changed. They came out of the factory with the same number anyway. Walt

Look to the left side of this page, click on "Tractor Registry" under "Research & info". Many of the Case models can be idenified with the engine serial nr. Some models like VAC can be ballparked years built using the engine serial nr and the parts manual.

If Glenn cannot provide a the Case contact, I will go through my stuff and find it.

Joe

Joe, Thanks for the lead to the tractor registry. However, after looking at it, I've found there is not enough information there to make the estimates. I think trying to contact Case is the best bet. Jim Gundlach Shorter, Alabama

For me this is just one of the many frustrating problems collecting more modern Case equipment, if you have the orginal serial number and E-mail Case they will tract down the build card which will tell you many things including the engine serial number, so therefore the information exists on the cards that are available, I do not know if they are able to search by engine serial number, but a simple computer program would take care of that, only if the orginal engine has not been altered, if and when they EVER get the J.I.Case archives in a permant residence and itemized, we would have a world of information available to all, I must say with as much talk about this over the years I really do not believe I will see this in my lifetime and there really has to be some underlying reason that this has not been resolved yet. The question members of both Case clubs should be asking is when is this going to happen maybe if we put pressure on the general officers of both clubs we might get something done. The Racine Hertiage Museum that was supposed to hold all of the donated artifacts, to my knowledge might not ever be built according to varius newspaper articles I have recieved from relatives that live in Racine.

Glenn, Do you have any idea who I might contact at Case to get a sample of Case cases to build this estimation model. Also, how I might go about contacting them? Jim Gundlach Shorter Alabama
