I could ask if the motor could be turned over by hand etc. But instead to determine value, what do what do Ford 8Ns in similiar condition go for in your area???...(Like real estate tractor values are in large part based on Location Location Location) and unfortuntely Fords are universally more popular (at least if based on price) than VACs. Can anyone on this board truthfully say that in their area comparing a Ford 2,8,9n and a similar quality VA series the Ford won't bring more money?? (Personally I hope that some of you can prove me wrong). I have a DC and a VAC and have no interest in having a Ford...but I seem to be in the minority...Working farms have a difficult time making ends meet and by and large cannot spend time and effort on older small tractors..The market driver for smaller older tractors are hobby farmers, sububanites, exurbanites,(I fall somewhere in thais category) whatever term you you choose to apply and those folks seem to prefer Ford 8Ns...Every auction I have been to an 8n will bring more money than any similiar size/age tractor and indeed in the Northeast where real farms are disappearing an 8n will bring more money that a 40-75 hp tractor....I paid far less for my DC than an 8n in worse conditon at the same auction...Same for my VAC

The upside is a VAC can be a great deal as it is a great tractor and you can get them for less money than Fords..

ok paul you said to beat you up here goes i have had several 8 ns fergusons 20 and 30s and 3 years ago purshased a vac 14 in good cond motor wise for 300 dollars the best 300 dollars i ever spent on a tractor i painted it restored it to a fashion put chains on it and ill tell you i wil back up to your 8n drawbar to drawbar and pull you backwards first of all the vac i have has 36 inch rubber and has a wider spread maybe the vac 14 mine is a 1957 last year the vac was made i believe according to my serial number anyway so to end this conv the vac with higher rubber than mine that i drove brand new in 1952 was a real nice tractor that had a 6 ft cutter bar mounted on rear and the foot feed for gas peddle was quite an improvement over the old dc that i used for a long time on a neighbors farm thanks for listing mitch pa

Donald,do you have a build card for your VAC-14. I have not seen one with 36" rubber and 1955 was the last year they where built. Martin

Wouldn't think of beating you up over that. You're dead-on.

A good-running VAC will work a good-running N Ford into the ground.

Never could understand why some folks are so fond of the N series. I cut my teeth on a 8N in the hayfield and if I ever have to sit on another one it'll be too soon.

I have noticed a decline in N prices over the last few years. 4 or 5 years ago you'd need $4k to buy a good 8N, now it only takes $2500-$3000. I think the abundance of cheap China import tractors are what's behind that.

That said, I wouldn't think of trying to put a value on a VAC based on what N Fords are going for any more than I'd try to price a 970 based on what 4020 JD's are bringing.

It's an apples and oranges thing. It doesn't make sense to me to buy an apple that I don't like when I can buy an orange that I like a whole lot for 1/3 the price of the nasty old apple...

I grew up with the '53 Ford Jubilee of my Dad's, and I now own and use my Grandpa's '48 Case VA. The 8, 9, 2N etc. Fords use a 3-point hitch that fits a lot of impliments out there. Even with an Eagle hitch, I think a lot of people are turned off by not knowing if they can find the tools to use with the tractor. My Case has just a drawbar, and I had to look a little to find a 5' drawbar KingKutter rotery mower. And then I had to tear out a PTO gear to learn that you disengage BEFORE you make that sharp turn!

The Fords might be seen as easier to get on and off of, and if you compare features year-to-year, I think the Fords might be seen as more advanced.

So, I guess it boils down to what you grew up with, what you use it for and what you like.

The VAC Case is twice the tractor as the 8N/9N Ford at half the money. Junk Fords bring as much as nice VAC's and I wouldn't own a 8N/9N if they were giving them away.

Just my opinion.
