out of curiosity is the coil wires hooked up correctly? is this a 12 volt system pos. ground? have you checked the firing at the plugs to see if its a blue spark snap? another thing is you can run a wire from battery to the coil connection + for pos. ground and try to start it.

Honestly I’m not sure about the ground being positive or negative. The negative battery cable is connected to the chassis. Does that mean it’s negative ground? If not I’d love an explanation on how to determine positive or negative ground.

I’m fairly certain the coil is wired correctly (or is at least hooked up the same way the old one was). I have a blue wire that appears to come from the switch and a black wire that goes to some type of relay that then goes over to the alternator (or generator I’m not sure) hooked you the positive side of the coil and then the negative side has one red wire that goes to what I think is a resistor then another wire comes off the other side of the resistor and goes to the distributor.

As far as spark at the plugs, the only testing I have done there is with a spark tester plugged in between the distributor and the plug itself.

I'm confused on the wiring described above. You are definitely wired NEG ground by your battery hook up. Next, correct coil? There are 3 types of coils. 6 volt, 12 volt for use w/ external resistor and 12 volt internally resisted. Your 310 when new used a 12 volt externally resisted coil. Determine which style coil you bought, whether or not the resistor is required. Assuming the resistor IS required, it will need to be re-wired and the resistor installed on the POS side of the coil. Wire feed to resistor, then resistor to POS side of coil. If the coil is "Internally resisted", remove it from the wiring altogether. Regardless, the resistor Never goes between the coil and distributor.

Point gap correct??
Try the old condenser since now days it is common to get a bad new condenser.
Maybe try a hot wire from the battery to the ignition side of the coil and see if it will start that way. If it does you may have a bad wire from the ignition to the coil or from the battery to the ignition

neg. to chassis is negative ground. do the simple thing... hook a wire from battery pos. to pos. terminal on coil. the negative lead should be going to distributor for a 12 volt system. if all is in order it will start. throw that tester away, remove plugs and check the actual spark at the plugs. you will hear it snap and it will be blue. if it starts you can do the rest later.

Finally got a chance to try everyone’s suggestions. I first pulled the #4 plug and it is clearly sparking to ground. I have not tried hot wiring the coil yet. Is that necessary since I know I am getting spark at the plug?
