There is real American heritage here. J.I.Case and all the other tractor companies that did not survive. Commercial jetliner companies... No McDonnel-Douglas. No Lockheed. No Martin. Boeing only. Thank goodness they're kicking butt and taking names! Airbus is a joke. Car companies have not been immune. DeSoto. Plymouth. Oldsmobile. Packard. Rambler. Studebaker. Fargo and Graham trucks. This isn't just an American issue. The little Austin mini survives, but where are MG, Triumph and Austin-Healy? Where are the British motorcycles?
.
I fear Mercury and GMC are living on borrowed time. What, really, is the difference between a Buick and Cadillac, besides the spelling? GM has got to cut the number of nameplates to survive and eliminate bureaucracy.
.
The privatized Chrysler has given me hope. Perhaps a private management structure can better reach for excellence. Maybe they'll look to their heritage. Perhaps they'll make a solidly built non-bubble family sedan called the Rambler or DeSoto. It would be too much to ask for steel bumpers, real chrome and tail fins, I suppose. :-)
