All matters considered, there really should be more Case collectors out there. After all, its now Case New Holland is it not? I think they should drop the IH name all together but it would probably bring too many IH guys to tears. Some of these guys are just a part of the ego instead of the ego being part of them. They would never forgive a company for dropping a name that is no longer in business.

I'm just glad that Case and IH are still out there and that there is more than just "green".

OT: Studebaker! Packard! in reply to smith tx, 01-17-2008 03:08:42
There is real American heritage here. J.I.Case and all the other tractor companies that did not survive. Commercial jetliner companies... No McDonnel-Douglas. No Lockheed. No Martin. Boeing only. Thank goodness they're kicking butt and taking names! Airbus is a joke. Car companies have not been immune. DeSoto. Plymouth. Oldsmobile. Packard. Rambler. Studebaker. Fargo and Graham trucks. This isn't just an American issue. The little Austin mini survives, but where are MG, Triumph and Austin-Healy? Where are the British motorcycles?
.
I fear Mercury and GMC are living on borrowed time. What, really, is the difference between a Buick and Cadillac, besides the spelling? GM has got to cut the number of nameplates to survive and eliminate bureaucracy.
.
The privatized Chrysler has given me hope. Perhaps a private management structure can better reach for excellence. Maybe they'll look to their heritage. Perhaps they'll make a solidly built non-bubble family sedan called the Rambler or DeSoto. It would be too much to ask for steel bumpers, real chrome and tail fins, I suppose. :-)

Interesting topic. When Case-IH and NH merged, I was told by a John Deere company person that they weren"t too worried. But had Case-IH joined with Cat, they would have been quite concerned. That would have been an interesting arrangement.

what really gets me is, CASE ih acts like there was never a J.I. CASE CO. or CASE farm tractor. it's still ihc! at least over at CASE CE they know were they came from!!!

Yes,all Case lovers including myself would have loved to see the Case Company on their own.But the cold hard facts are it wouldnt be here as Don eluded too.I knew Jim Kittleson, who at one time ran Case Company, and was at the helm when the IHC thing came down.Personally I know Mr Kittleson loved Case like we all do.In fact in his Houston Tenneco office he had a original Case Eagle. But he knew he had to do something.

Unfortunately, agriculture is much different than it was 28 years ago. The advent of no-till means there is almost no need for the big hp monsters any longer. And you can plant thousands of acres of corn by putting on a couple hundred hours on a tractor, which means fewer tractors are needed. Also, smaller dairy and beef operations are practically all gone and that was a large part of machinery dealers business. That being said, it was inevitable that some manufacturing capacity had to be gotten rid of. When I toured the Case factory in April 1985 they were building 10 tractors a day-their capacity was 125 according to the tour guide. That just couldn't last. Case may have been able to merge with New Holland instead of IH or maybe Hesston to stave off going out of business for awhile. The tractor only model of operation just didn't cut it. I am as unhappy as anybody over the IH buyout. It never really worked out as the original Case dealers hate the IH managers who are arrogant as Hell. The original IH dealers hate the Case brand like crazy and despise the original Case guys. The dealers who were left behind in the buyout were really mad at first, but after looking back realize they were lucky to get out when they did, for the most part.
We all have to face reality and realize that Case is dead and has been since 1985. The company was worthless since the middle 40's as far as management was concerned. It exists now as a figment of our imagination and in name only.
Don

Now, I'm a Case lover through and through, but I think Case would either not exist, or would have been bought out and absorbed by someone else if not for the IH merger. As I have heard it, Case was struggling as a tractor-only manufacturer. To keep the company going, they needed to add a strong harvest and implement line, such as what IH offered. In my humble opinion, the merger saved both companies from disaster, and kept their heratige moving forward. Now since then, the IH heratige is celebrated much more than the Case side, which is unfortunate for Case lovers, but is understandable, as there are many more Farmall and IH people to be found.

Tennaco was trying to sell off Case at the time IH was going out of business but couldnt find a buyer. They did an abrupt turn around and bought portions of IH to add to Case. My thought is if the merger hadnt happenned both would have dissappeared. Of course this is pure speculation on my part. I'm a fan of the blue Fords and I'm not real happy about the buyout of Ford/NH by Fiat, but thats the way it goes I guess. (I have a Case 1070 too)

The bigger mistake was selling out to New Holland in my opinion. Parts availability and price have really gotten bad. IH had some good tractors and designs so that merger wasnt as bad as this latest one. Thad

At least we people involved in the Case business wouldn't have to put up with the C1 R1-2-3- etc part numbers.
