If you would like to be able to time it so that some with a timing light would not to make an adjustment and declare it as good as he could get it.
Take all the spark plugs out to allow it to turn with a hand crank with the least effort. Place your thumb over the number one plug hole. When you feel the air pressure stop. Inch the crank checking for the flywheel TDC mark in the inspection hole. When the TDC mark is centered, set the distributor to point to plug wire terminal number one. (Front Plug) put a spark plug on the wire and ground it to the block in a position to watch for a spark. With power on inch the crank until this plug fires. the instant it fires stop and check for TDC in the inspection hole. Adjust the distributor until when sparking the TDC is centered. This tractor has a mechanical advance and when the engine is set this way and you place a timing light on when the tractor is running the light will show the FIRE mark centered in the inspection hole.
This way even the novice can time exact with or without an ear.
Works on any engine with a mechanical advance.
This method is like checking a math problem.

Maybe I should start over I don't think I was very clear...tractor is running I'm trying to find this inspection hole you are referring to...there are NO holes of any kind in bellhousing...the only place that I can even see the flywheel is inspection plates on the front of flywheel[under tractor] & the plate under starter on top...I would like to put a light on it..thanks ...Marvin
