I have a B that originally was on steel. It now has cutoffs on the front and rubber on the back. I need to find out if the rear cast wheels (which mount to the axle) are correct and I just need steel wheels (which would bolt on) or if they swapped the wheels complete with a rubber tractor. I have heard that original wheel for steel tire tractors would have 4 V-notches in the periphery (like where the valve stem sits on a rubber tire tractor). Is this so?

Also, does anyone have a good close-up picture of the mounting of the steel to the wheel? Can I mount my existing wheels?

i have a 39 allis b with the arched adjustable front axle "rare i think" on steel with al the "goodys" that i am almost ready to paint and i am almost the purest that some have talked about when it comes to this tractor restoration and know that this tractor will be almost useless after its done but i bet i wont have to look for people to talk to about it. but now back to the purest part i need the front bearing caps to fit the steel or some off the cut-offs are the same can anyone help .thanks

Hi D13,

This thread, in which I posted some pictures might be helpful to you. The steel wheels did not use the rim clamps. They were attached to the hubs with bolts that were inserted through tabs welded to the steel wheels.

I'm just commenting from the sidelines so don't twist your Jockeys but why in the world [unless you are a "Purist"] would you want to put "Steel"back on your B? The person who changed it to "Rubber:" did it for a reason. "Mobility any where"is primary I think. Steel does not lend it self to travel any where but in a field. Unless of course you can alter it with Banding then the whole deal of Steel Wheels is lost.If you persist tho, good Luck and "Merry Christmas" and I am sure "Happy Holidays" will result.

I have 3 B"s. One is my Dad"s last purchase, has added hydraulics and a front or belly blade, and is in the repaint stage. One is a "custom" in the "modify" stage, and runs an L59 Woods mower. And one is a fairly original steel wheel tractor that I bought as a parts machine, was going to put the cutoffs and wide rear fenders on my custom with some other stuff. Now that I know what it is I may sell it as a cool restoration project, hate to part it. Thus I need to know how much is "wrong". So far it seems to have most of the steel wheel goodies but the rear wheels could be a challenge to find.

Oh yeah, I have the correct non-hydraulic PTO/belt box, belt pulley, swinging drawbar (with wood chuck pads), manual lift plow and cultivators, and belly sickle mower. And some wheel weights, and chains, small cultipcker, etc. So it will be a nice project as long as a body knows what they are getting.

Personally I"m going to put 11" turfs on the hot rod and 10.4"s on the worker, if I keep it. I love rubber, but hate to cut up a 65 year old machine on steel.

like JC i dont wanna start a ruckus but steel wheels have a single purpose and if you move it away from farm its got to be on a trailer...even a show piece is limited to sittin there lookin purty or participating in pulls...forget about parades thru town and mowing damp pastures...just my .02
