It depends on what you want to do with this tractor. If it will mostly be parade duty and you will seldom use the lights, you can keep the battery up just with an external charger. If you want to use lights, and not mess with the external charger, you can get a 12 volt generator, but an alternator is more trouble-free. As another poster said, you can get a rebuilt GM 10SI alternator for very little. But since the C is a smaller tractor, size is a consideration. There are some Japanese alternators out there that have a smaller diameter. Regardless, an alternator is much more trouble free, and installation is more straight-forward. If you are concerned with the asthetics and want the tractor to look more authentic, then look for a 12 volt generator.
