Phil, I built a puller when I did my WD this summer. It was crude but it worked. Your local NAPA store may have a puller that you could use or rent if you're in a farming area. If you like, I could take some pictures of the device I made to do it. You will need a laythe to make my contraption.
I changed blocks because I thought that I had cracks in the block in the web area between the cylinders in the o-ring area. However, my o-rings looked bad enough that they could have been the problem in there own right. Now I have a questionable block sitting on the floor!

A good engine machine shop can check your block for cracks.
