I just finished restoring a 48B and I took every panel off and stripped everthing back to bare metal or casting where possible then used a rust preventative where needed (carefull NOT to brush this on - youll never hide the brush marks) then a good primer and then a prep coat and then the final coat. Its the only way to ensure a good job -well I think so anyway- watch what paint you buy as some are not fuel proof and will chip easy so go for a 2 pot mix or add a hardener..or if you can get your paint custom made using a swatch of colour or something painted the same colour.
and always allow for extra cus youll be hand painting all the nuts and bolts and bits the gun cant reach...you are going to spend a long time doin her up so a few extra hours to make her really shine and knowin you did a great job will really be worth it
