I have taken on the task of restoring an old B for my family. The tractor runs fine, however looks really bad but hey it is a 1946 model. I have found a supplier for the paint and I have the sandblasting equiptment. My question is how deep to cut with the sand blaster. Is the metal on this tractor naturally brown kind of like wrought iron or shiny like steel.and should I strip every part off and paint individually. My family has no intentions of selling and if they did I would buy it so the detail of a showroom tractor isn't needed, but I want to do it right.

I just finished restoring a 48B and I took every panel off and stripped everthing back to bare metal or casting where possible then used a rust preventative where needed (carefull NOT to brush this on - youll never hide the brush marks) then a good primer and then a prep coat and then the final coat. Its the only way to ensure a good job -well I think so anyway- watch what paint you buy as some are not fuel proof and will chip easy so go for a 2 pot mix or add a hardener..or if you can get your paint custom made using a swatch of colour or something painted the same colour.
and always allow for extra cus youll be hand painting all the nuts and bolts and bits the gun cant reach...you are going to spend a long time doin her up so a few extra hours to make her really shine and knowin you did a great job will really be worth it

Mark, it dont have to be bare, but it does have to be clean. You can sandblast if you wish, or you can run a sander over it to rough up the surface and get the glaze/film off. If you sandblast, be carefull on the sheetmatal tank, hood and fenders. The frame and axle, transmission can take a lot of cutting, the hood will distort if done too much. All metal will look shiny when sandblasted. Be carefull not to get sand into seal, oil, air cleaner, etc.

go to the previous page. at the top is a box saying "Another Forum". Check on the Paint and Bodywork group. You can get additional information from those guys. Basicaly as i said, get it clean and rough up the old paint, or sandblast and watch the seals. You can get info on types of paint from them also. Are you using automotive paint, or $25 gallon from hardware store?
