Hi Bill, We had a grand day today. Just absolutely fell in love with the owners of the farm. Come to find out, is only 8 or so miles down the road from the farm where I was hatched and I kinda knew the area anyway. So, the wife (being the learned one from St. Louis) is yanking her checkbook out and wants this place and wants it right now. She is having visions of calling the cattle buyer and ordering a pot of calves. I finally and somewhat diplomatically got her into the car and out of the yard without writing a down payment. She is looking at me like she would like to rip my arms off and stuff 'em down my throat and I tell her, "Please listen to me on this one, Sweet pea; you know the family business, but I know dirt and this just isn’t all it seems". The farm is an irrigator's worst nightmare; However, I can handle that trip tho, 'cause I'm used to it. I can live with the tough irrigating as it has more than enough acres under water rights and another fair chunk of dry land. The killer is that the place has roughly 80 or 90 acres of pure alkaline wasteland on one quarter, which the owner is calling prime; trouble is, it won’t grow a bloody thing. Yes, I’d like to have the place, but we are going to have to make some major changes in the bottom line of the paperwork before I’ll agree. I gotta talk to the real estate agent on Monday, I guess. Told ya I was kinda “picky”. :>) Allan

An Old-Time Tractor Demonstration - by Kim Pratt. Sam was born in rural Kansas in 1926. His dad was a hard-working farmer and the children worked hard everyday to help ends meet. In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
