Lately, every time I've posted on this board, I've been wrong, and someone has been kind enough to point it out to me.

This time, I speak from the voice of 15 years worth of experience. I bought a John Deere 750 new in 1988.

"Power steering and shuttle shift are almost essential". My 750 has neither. Both would be nice, neither is essential. Power steering is available but not common.

"Don't expect to pull any real equipment with it." I hear this all the time, and due to the light weight of the machine it is true where traction is an issue, such as plowing or heavy blading. The 4' bush hog limit amuses me tho. I've been running a 5' Woods M5 Dixie Cutter from day one, and in some HEAVY stuff. True, I can't pop it in 8th gear and go whistling through 4 foot grass, but I've cut an AWFUL lot of 2-3" alders and poplar in 1st and 2nd, and grass up to a foot in 4th and 5th.

I'll agree 4WD IS essential. The tractor's main fault is that it's too light, and the 4WD is the only way to put enough power on the ground to do a lot of work.

IT IS NOT A TOY, and I get awful tired of hearing that. I've used my Woods 3PH Backhoe to dig footings and cellar holes, dig up tree stumps and rocks, I've bush-hogged 20 acre fields, cleared 2 acre lots, and done other things that leave onlookers standing there with their mouth hanging open.

Yup, it's small, and yup, it takes longer, but it is one rugged tractor and will do a heck of a lot of work if you go about it right.

And $7800 for a 750 with loader, 4WD and 800+ hours is in the ballpark in my area.

Today's Featured Article - Harvestin Hay: The Early Years (Part 2) - by Pat Browning. The summer of 1950 was the start of a new era in farming for our family. I was thirteen, and Kathy (my oldest sister) was seven. At this age, I believed tractor farming was the only way, hot stuff -- and given a chance I probably would have used the tractor, Dad's first, a 1936 Model "A" John Deere, to go bring in the cows! And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th ... [Read Article]
