With all welding you really should have some what clean material to weld on, but with Tig you have to have very clean material. You need to buy a wire wheel, sanding pads, or flop disc for your grinder. If you get into aluminum work you'll need stainless steel wire wheel, and don't use it on anything but aluminum!
Try to remember to keep the filler rod real close to the puddle while welding that way it is inside the gas coverage zone. Cut the end of the filler rod off before each use. When starting, let the puddle form before dipping, and when you're about to finish dip one last time, that way you won't get the holes at the end of the welds.
