I work as a mechanic in an aircraft refinishing shop and the painters first base coat the plane, then mask out the lines with a product actually called line tape by 3m. They then sand down the line area and apply a thin coat of highbuild,sand again then do the final colors. This process seems to work pretty good because they've recieved awards for the jobs.
