I made a decision to either not use hardeners at all or get a supplied-air breathing system many years ago. It was made after two bad exposure experiences with isocyanates (actual product was the hardener used in PPG's Delstar Acrylic Enamel) while using a cartridge respirator - outside I might add. I decided my continued good respiratory health was important enough to purchase the necessary equipment and be safe so I could continue to use modern painting materials. I have never regretted that decision, having never had another bad experience because of it. I cannot make a health-related decision for someone else. There are too many variables involved and I am not a medical doctor. I will say that I do all my painting outside, have for many years and will not paint without a supplied-air respirator. You can be exposed to very high concentrations of overspray in your breathing zone no matter how calm it is or what way the breeze is blowing. Since I will not paint outside using hardeners and only a cartridge respirator myself, I will not recommend such a practice to others. You should review as much information as possible from responsible, authoritative sources and make your own personal decision. Here's what PPG has to say about the issue.
