I think it's important to anyone considering the issues here that they understand that people do not all react the same to iso exposure. Hence the reference to "susceptibility of the individual" in the link. Even the accepted permissible exposure limits from NIOSH are based on "average healthy people", emphasis on the average. Those who are fortunate enough to have a professional downdraft spraybooth in good functional order can get away with a lot more than the typical DIY simply because the ventilation system (huge) tends to do a good job of minimizing breathing zone exposure in the first place. There are those, both professional and not, that swear that a cartridge respirator is all that is needed because that is all they have ever used for many years and have not had a problem, even outside a pro booth. I'm not suggesting they're wrong - only that they are fortunate to be able to do so. Not everyone is as fortunate and many (like me) will have to experience one or more bad reactions before enough attention is paid to their own health. The collective industry experience with isocyanates over the past thirty or so years will show that responsible authorities now recommend supplied-air and have for some time. DuPont was in 1985, so it's nothing new. I have yet to see any manufacturer of respiratory cartridges recommend their use for isocyanates where the actual breathing zone exposure concentration is unknown - which is always the case without a formal industrial hygiene survey ($$$) of the operation.
