You don't have to take the transmission cover off, but you do need to "Z" split the tractor. The only special tool you will need will be the spanner nut wrench to remove the pto clutch assembly. I made mine out of pipe. I highly suggest you get a hold of a shop manual. You could get by with the IT manual, the reproduction Oliver manuals cover a lot of tractors and are pricey, but worth it.
